Now it's time for Challenge 2: designing a shop for any of the Walt Disney parks or either of the Disneyland parks. You need to give descriptions of the shop (what it looks like, etc.), which park it is in, a few things it sells there, if it goes along with a ride (put which ride if so), and if it replaces another shop. I can't wait to see what great ideas we'll see this week. Remember, this challenge ends on January 28 and we ARE having elimination this time. The proprietress is a new Disney character, a sassy redheaded aviatrix with a bomber jacket and an old-fashioned leather flight helmet with goggles. She is equal parts Jessica Rabbit and Gadget Hackwrench, physically appealing while still maintaining an aura of wholesomeness, mostly due to her single-minded love of flight. The counters that were originally used for checking in passengers are now used as the check-out counters, with ornate old cash registers (fitted, of course, with modern technology like barcode scanners). The rotating luggage carousels are now piled high with merchandise, and rotate slowly to display the various wares. Old travel posters of former destinations still line the walls, with such whimsically exotic locales as Pico de Gallo, and Blanche-Niege (Snow White). Suspended overhead is a slightly stylized version of the Wright Brother's original plane, propellers still spinning slowly. The store's merchandise reflects Ms. Hawk's fascination with flight, consisting of model airplanes, kites, and balloons of every type imaginable. There are books on the history of aviation, as well as books and supplies for making paper airplanes. There is even a section devoted to model rocketry and the evolution of space flight. Over in one corner, looking a little bit different than the rest of the store, with old dark wood bookshelves (one of which is labeled inconspicuously as being Area 51 ) is a section devoted to aliens and UFO's. Music played over the PA system is primarily swing music from the 1940's, the time when this building was abandoned, In a similar fashion to Star Tours, there are occasional announcements made regarding late or rescheduled flights, or attempts to locate wayward crew members, as well as broadcast chatter between the tower and passing aircraft. This could allow for shout-outs for Disney pilots of yore, like Baloo and Launchpad McQuack. Well, there you have it. When you are ready to post, and when you know you have the proposal done the exact way you want it, post it. If you always bring your "A" game and set the bar high, let the others try to meet it. If they can, they will. If they can't, you'll win. Part of the fun of competitions like this is that each participant has to improve or be fired. You push each other to do better. If you see others gaining on you, work harder. In TPA2 I know that I always did the best I could every challenge. I didn't win, but I know I did the best I could and wouldn't change a thing I did (and I argued the point more than once ;+) I had a ball and have no regrets. From Tim WPosted January 20, 2011 at 1:06 PMWonderland ShoppeThis store will be based off of the Alice in Wonderland movies that Disney has produced. It will be located in Magic Kingdom's Fantasyland, right behind Mad Tea Party. The store will be in a very whimsical looking building, similar to how the Mad Tea Party looks, with bright colors. Before you enter the shop, you encounter a unique way of entering that is an experience all of its own. (Although you can go through the side entrance as well which leads you into the shop)Guards, dressed like cards escort you into the main entrance, and you enter one of three doors, all of which contain elaborately themed rooms that resemble a lush garden with large plants. Then you will see the White Rabbitt inviting you into the Wonderland Shoppe. But there is a special way to get in. Guests are then invited to go down a spiral slide, similar to Alice's fall down the rabbitt hole, that leads them out into the store. While falling down the slide, you pass by numerous things that are falling, as in the movies. You then enter the store, where just as amazing decor as the begining room. The interior is a mini recreation of Wonderland. Instead of carpet, you will be walking on fake grass. Inside the store, you will find numerous goods themed to different characters, movie merchandise, and of course books. Overhead, you will be listening to music that has been inspired from Alice in Wonderland, the soundtracks from the movies, and of course the Almost Alice cd.Merchandise:The store will be split up into four different sections, similar to how the World of Disney or the shops at the Contemporary Resort are set up, with archways leading into the other areas.In the store, the first section will be comprised of media of wonderland. Here you will find the original Disney classic, and the new Alice in Wonderland movies to purchase. You will also find a variety of posters, cds, video games, and books. Books: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass, The Nursery Alice, and other novels that are based off of the books such as by Frank Beddor, author of the Looking Glass Wars. Next you will see an area themed to the Tea Party. Here you can purchase a vairty of themed mugs, kitchenware, collectables, snow globes, and candy all themed to Wonderland. The third area will be themed to the Cheshire Cat. It will feature a variety of plush toys, figurines, toy sets, and games (monopoly, life, clue) all themed to Alice in Wonderland.The final area is themed to the Queen of Hearts, and will be her own private boutique that sticks out from the rest. It will be an area that is filled with hearts and will be the carpeted portion of the store. In here, you will find pins, clothing, jewlery, and accessories.As you conclude your visit through the Wonderland Shoppe, you head to the Cash Registers of Wonderland to make your final purchases. After guests have exited the ride, they enter the shop. The shop is half shop, half play area for the kids. The store is themed as you are still a toy, so you'll see giant pencils, books, and other things you would find in a kid's bedroom.On the store half, guests will find Toy Story merchandise such as :Toy Story Blu-Ray discs or DVDs (separate or in a boxed set)The toys (Woody, Buzz, Ham, Rex, Jesse, Slink, Green Army Men, the aliens, etc.). You can get these figures individually or in a collector's set with all the toys that come in a deluxe toybox. Books, such as the junior novels, picture books for kids, etc.Electronics, like video games and CDs.Some of Andy's favorite board games like Monopoly (with or without a Toy Story theme), the Game of LIFE, Battleship, and Yahtzee. And finally your miscellaneous stuff, like posters (like movie posters that you see at the theater), mugs, notebooks, LEGO sets (you know, the Toy Story 3 ones), backpacks, T-shirts, and other things along the lines of that.On the pay area side, kids can go into Toy Story heaven and play on some of the giant bedroom objects. for example, a ruler would function as a slide, a giant bean bag chair would function as a sort of trampoline, building blocks would be giant stairs (leading to a slide or something), and other giant objects you would find in a kid's bedroom. That allows the kids who are tired of shopping to run and be free while parents check out the items. I somewhat agree that it could get a little crowded and overwhelming for the store. My other option was to imaginary place an Alice in Wonderland ride, like the one from Disneyland, into fantasyland. Then this would be the shop coming off of the ride. From Randall PeekPosted January 21, 2011 at 2:12 AMI think an interesting take on the Wonderland store would have a transition between the cartoon version of the classic Alice film to the comparatively realistic Wonderland of the recent Tim Burton film. An interesting way of doing the transition would be to have the two rooms separated from one another by a wall, and on the wall are a series of 'mirrors,' in reality just slightly silvered glass, so it is still essentially transparent, with the classic Alice character on one side facing its own 'reflection' of the Burton version, and vice versa, as seen in the other room. The figures could be full-scale recreations, possibly even Audio-Animatronics, so that they actually mirror each others movements. Remember the classic mirror routine with Groucho and Harpo Marx? These stores will be the home of an exclusive partnership between APPLE and DISNEY that will allow guests with IPODS, IPADS, IPOD TOUCHES, and IPHONES to download any film from the Disney archive directly to their devices while in the store. Everything from SKELETON DANCE to CONDORMAN, from PLANE CRAZY to TRON will be available here and only here to download and take wherever you go.Kiosks for these downloads will be be shaped like giant film reel cans stacked one atop another and will be staffed directly by Apple trained Disney castmembers similar to the service you see at Apple Stores in high end shopping malls.Not unlike the shops of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, THE STUDIO ARCHIVE stores on each coast will be the only place a lot of this merchandise will be found in the world and will be a destination in and of itself for movie fans. The store will be in the shape of the pentagon and in the middle will be a two story warehouse that will have all the merchandise. On the outside, the warehouse part will be completely black with different scenes of Disney images moving around the outside. On the top of the warehouse will be a giant crystal ball with figurines of Disney characters floating inside it (such as Aladdin, Hercules, Mulan, Cinderella, etc. The store will be pretty big and will have 4 different themes: Disney heroes, Disney princesses, future technology, and fantasy. Everything will take up 1/5 of the store and the remaining 1/5 will be a place where people can eat. A key feature in each section will be that they will all have kiosk that customers will be able to buy smaller merchandise from such as Vinylmation collectors items, sweat shirts, snow globes, etc. The kiosk will work by being directly connected to the warehouse at the center of the store. The customer will select the item they are looking for by going through different categories and browsing different items, typing in a key word, or picking up an order they filled out earlier (either they placed a order earlier and asked to pick up the item later or they ordered it online.). Once the customer has found what they are looking for, they will pay for it using credit card, debit card, or cash and the order will be sent to the warehouse where cast members will find the item(s) and place them one by one on a table that will push the item to the kiosk door. While the customer is waiting, they can watch short cartoons on the touch screen window they ordered their item on. Once the item arrives, smoke will billow out of a door and the item will appear magically. Each kiosk will be themed after something from the area they are in. For example, in the Disney Heroes section, one of the kiosk will be themed after Aladdin. It will have a globe in the center with genie around the outside (kind of like the Aladdin float in the magic kingdom parade). The touch screen will be below that and look like it is floating on the smoke that genie produces whenever he comes out of his lamp. The smoke that comes out of this kiosk will be blue to match genies magic smoke. Once the smoke begins to billow, genies eyes will start flashing and he will say something like "And heeeeere it comes!" (or something else genie would say like a cheesy joke or something). Bags will be placed along the side of the kiosk so customers can bag their item(s). THE SEVEN DWARVES STASHRight after guests get off the ride, they enter another cave-looking room with carts scattered throughout the room. There will be all of the typical things that Disney has in their end-of-ride shops. Plush dolls, pins, books, dvds, video games, cds, and other various merchandise. There will be certain merchandise on display in mine carts, exactly like the ones that the guests just rode in. The big draw for this shop is that guests can buy Disney jewelry inspired by the ones that certain characters wore in the movies. Want an Aztec gold necklace like Captain Jack? How about a tiara exactly like Sleeping Beauty's? Also, the Disney engagement and wedding rings will be available for purchase, as well as some other items that you can only buy in this store. Although I wonder about that UFO section... still a great ideaTim- You as well had a great idea. I liked how the shop was separated into parts. However, I have to agree with the others about the slide; it would get clogged up easily. Also, I don't think a big shop like this would fit with a small midway ride. Joseph- Your idea was astounding. Your choice of merchandise was superb, but I'm pondering the inclusion of the Apple downloads. It's a good idea, but like Randall said, I wonder about how long it would take to download, and I don't think many people, especially the kids, would have an Apple product. My favorite of the week.Damond- You are doing very well. Although the name is kinda cheesy, the interior is great. I wonder about the shape of the store, but I loved how you have a different introductions for items from each kiosk. Very creative idea. Anthony- I've always wanted a Haunted Mansion shop! Your tombstone idea was funny; that was probably my favorite merchandise. I like how you included the optical illusion merchandise. I'm not sure how the shop would be "under" the border, but I'm sure you could explain it to me. Eric- Last but certainly not least is Eric. Even though the Seven Dwarves Mine Coaster is not out yet, I still loved the shop. I especially liked the jewelry idea; it fits the theme of mining very well. Even though your idea was short, I guess "quality is better than quantity" can fit here perfectly. Good job everyone. It was tough picking a favorite, as I loved every single entry. It looks like we'll have some tough competition this season :). Its near the back end of Peter Pan's flight. Underneath that "tunnel" is an entryway for a store that pretty much sells kitchen items, if I am remembering correctly! In the circle of friends I hang out with that IPOD (or IPHONE as the case may be) goes with them everywhere. Next time you head out to an amusement park keep an eye out for the number of teenager especially plugged into their Ipods.
